This chapter sketches the life of George W. Page, a prodigious turn-of-the-century architect who deserves to be better known.

First Hayes Mansion

The first Hayes mansion, a 22,000-square-foot Victorian masterpiece designed by George Page as a triple residence is described in this chapter. That mansion was destroyed by fire in 1899.

Second Hayes Mansion

This chapter describes the second Hayes mansion, also designed by George Page, another triple residence with 64 rooms and 40,000 square feet of space, and completed in 1905.

Hayes Family Estate

The Hayes family’s estate, a working farm of more than 600 acres with a private park designed by the Hotel del Monte’s (Monterey) landscape architect is described in this chapter. The park later became Frontier Village Amusement Park and is now Edenvale Garden Park.

Conference Center

The final chapter tells the story of how many people rallied around the abandoned mansion, determined not to let it fall victim to the fate of countless other historic buildings around the country. Through their efforts, the Hayes Mansion Conference Center exists today, the realization of a vision that will assure its future and bring Edenvale to prominence once more.
