What is it that drives ordinary people to research, write, and publish
local history? One common trait is probably curiosity. That's what
fueled Nancy Newlin's desire to write about the Hayes mansion, and
what also led her to publish a second edition of her book, The Gem
of Edenvale: San Jose's Historical Hayes Mansion, in time for the
mansion's centennial in 2007.
After an overview of the history of the mansion and the Hayes family, Ms. Newlin will share some stories of the frustrations and treasures of historical research.
Update on July 10, 2007 Centennial Event
at the Hayes Mansion
More than 500 people joined Dolce Hayes mansion management
and officials from the City of San Jose on July 10, 2007, to kick
off the mansion's centennial celebration. Twenty of the attendees
were members of the Hayes family. Nancy Newlin, author of The
Gem of Edenvale: The Historic Hayes Mansion of San Jose, California presented
a talk about the mansion titled "Remembering the Hayes Mansion." Her
talk was greeted by an energetic round of applause and a bouquet of
roses from the Dolce Hayes mansion managment.

Nancy Newlin engaged in conversation at the
booksigning table.
